'To Read or Not to Read' by Mekhla Harrison

Is Reading a Good Habit???
I would wonder if that is a question or is that a given…….for me it sure is a good habit.

I got into the habit of reading at a very young age, I give the credit to my parents who bought us interesting comics and books for our age, and especially to my mother, who read out aloud the short stories to us, form our library of Children’s books

How does one get into the habit of reading a book if one isn’t in the habit already? And also in this day and age of computers, when everything is at hand on a laptop or ones PC then most people do not like to read from a book any more? Well, I say it’s never too late. Although reading needs to be inculcated in us from a very young age but one can start reading and get addicted to books any time. And once you get into this habit you will defiantly start enjoying being on your own.

How does one know what to read? I think it is a personal choice, but to get into the habit of reading, start by reading short stories, articles of your choice in a magazine or news paper. Or better still, read the latest best seller, since it is something that is a hot favorite of your peer group! I personally love to know more about our History and I have a passion for travelling and seeing places, and so my favorite books have been books about biographies, wars and travelogues. When I was a child my favorites were on mysteries and adventure!!  When one is alone it’s the best way to spend ones time…read and get to know more about things.

Mr Pawan , our Librarian,  has been emailing  us articles from the news papers that are relevant for all,  success stories in the corporate, fashion articles  and also articles on issues  like the climate and the weather – recently when the cyclone Phailin hit the eastern coast , a relevant article on how the cyclone is formed , was posted by him to all in the campus!

Although it is wonderful to actually flip over pages and read from a book, but I would recommend all to even read on your computers. It is getting in the habit of reading that is important.

Ryan is currently studying at the WLCI, Mumbai Campus. In this post, He talks about his recent exposure at the cutting edge camp.

My time at WLCI as a student has been a learning experience till now. I have learnt how to improve on my communication skills and interpersonal skills. Also this course has taught me to apply what I have learned in a more efficient  ways than I used to. I have developed new skills which are helping me to improve and be certain about my goals in life.
The skills which did not exist in me are helping me to look at life an all new perspective. The lecturers in WLCI have been very helpful and are experienced enough to impart  knowledge which has helped me in my life.
The latest thing that WLCI has given me is an opportunity to attend the cutting edge camp. This camp has been a great exposure for me . I have yet again got an opportunity to develop new skills which I did not possess and improve my existing abilities.I have learnt how to set goals in my life and how to plan my life in a more organized way.

This camp has made me more disciplined which will help me to also excel in life. Also, it has taught me how to live within a group codependently. We always tried to help each other in whatever way we can.
This experience has been a memorable one through which I have learnt a lot. I will forever be thankful to the camp.

Indian clothing is rich in embroidery and intricate designing. Popularly known as Indian karigari, this reflects expertise work of Indian culture. There are different forms of embroidery found here related to different provinces respectively. Like, if you go to Jammu and Kashmir, much of thread work on pashmina will be found. Going down to south will introduce you to kanjiwaram silk, which speaks of classiness and elegance. One of the famous embroidery arts is zari ki karigari, which is very commonly found on most of ethnic Indian women attires. Originated in the interiors of central India, it used to be main occupation of certain communities in Uttar Pradesh.

Zari embroidery is basically intricate metal designing done on traditional wears like sarees, lehengas, suits and others. It takes a lot of time, expertise and labour to come up with a good work. One thing that has remained common over ages is that it is done manually by artisans. Designs might have changed over years, but the grace of this karigari is still the same. In fact, zari embroidery contributes a major share in the overall segment of Indian handicrafts.

The growing popularity of Indian embroidery has influenced fashion conscious people around the world. Not only Indian designers, fashion professionals across globe have shown their inclination towards Indian art. In fact, in a lot of fashion institutes, these traditional embroideries are now included as a part of fashion designing courses. Students are given an overview of the intricate traditional designing and are told with their applications. Fashion professionals infuse traditional embroideries and art work with modern designs to give a different look. This pattern is very common these days.
